The ‘Knotty’ was the nickname given by the locals to the North Staffordshire Railway, a company born in the 1840s and lasted right through until the 1923 grouping when it was amalgamated into the London Midland & Scottish Railway. The Knot of Staffordshire featured prominently on company property including wagons, hence the nickname. Often overlooked, the Knotty was centered around Stoke on Trent, serving the potteries and other industries with lines radiating outwards in nearly every direction with connections to many other companies allowing through running of wagons. These companies included the London & North Western Railway, Great Central Railway, Great Western Railway, Great Northern Railway and the Midland Railway. This is the first ready to run wagon available in the NS Railway livery. ERA: 2.
