Tilmanstone was the best known colliery in the Kent Coalfield and was located close to the village of Eythorne. Work began on sinking at Tilmanstone in 1906 but due to the wet and deep nature of the coal seams it was 1912 before the colliery became truly productive. The colliery supplied bituminous coal used primarily in the steel industry. Mining continued on the site until it's closure in 1987. ERA's: 2 & 3.
